In our last blog Dr. McKenzie talked extensively about ticks. Now let's discuss prevention!

Often we are asked which product is best for your pet. All of the the products listed below are effective in tick prevention, choice is often made depending on what method of administration you prefer, eg your if dog is fussy about treats, or anything different than regular diet, then a topical may be the better choice.

We offer the following tick prevention for your dog:

Bravecto: Bravecto is an easy to administer chew with a pork liver flavour that dogs like. One chew provides three months of protection against fleas and ticks. Bravecto can safely be administered to dogs who are: Over 6 months of age and weigh at least 2 kg. Bravecto works from the inside-out. Family members and other pets, including cats, can be in close contact with your dog even immediately after the chew is given.

Nexgard: Nexgard comes in a soft, beef flavoured chewable tablet, so again administration is easy. One chew provides flea and tick protection for one month. Can be given to puppies as young as 8 weeks of age and dogs as small as 1.8 kg.

Advantix K9 Advantix comes in pre-measured tubes that you apply topically to your dog's skin. One application protects against fleas and ticks, mosquitos and lice for one month. Advantix is toxic to cats so if you have a cat in the home, please be aware.

We offer the following for tick prevention for your cat:

Bravecto: Bravecto also comes in a topical application for your cat. Bravecto topical is the first and only topical solution for cats that persistently kills ticks on your cat for 8 weeks with a single application. Also provides 12 weeks of flea protection for your cat.
